McCabe Magazine Top 50 Prospects in Baseball
Listed below are McCabe Magazine's top 50 prospects in
baseball. We have chosen San Diego Low-A prospect Andrew O'Leary (2B)
as the number one overall minor leaguer in baseball. This can't
miss player will win the season 45 Rookie of the Year award and a minimum of
2 MVPs during his major league career. He's the rare 5-tool player that does
everything on the field at a first ballot Hall of Fame level. He is the
best prospect I've ever seen since I flew to Juarez, Mexico and saw Hall of
Framer Alexei
DaSilva at the age of 14 bashing 475 foot Home Runs in the Mexican
League against players twice his age. Yes, I said it, O’Leary is that good. So
get ready to witness a generational type player and a future
Hall of Framer in San Diego Padres Andrew O'Leary.
Here a quick break down of the minor leaguers in our Top 50
Rankings. The New York Yankees had the most prospects make our top 50 rankings
with a total of 6 players. Cleveland Indians and Tampa Bay Rays both had 4
each, followed by Baltimore Orioles, Pittsburgh Pirates, and San Diego Padres
with 3 each. We had seven (7) teams with 2 prospects on our list and
thirteen (13) clubs with one (1) player each. And finally, there were six (6)
organizations with zero (0) prospects making our top 50 rankings. For more
information on the break down please see our chart below.

Massey was the 6th overall selection
in the season 40 amateur draft . He is our number 2 ranked pitching prospect
in baseball. He has 4 quality pitches with his three best being the sinker,
slider and curveball. San Diego AA pitching coach Andy James told McCabe
Magazine Massey has the best sinker he's ever seen, and the slider and curve
not for behind. Those three pitches will keep him in the majors for a long
time. |

Arizona's Mr. Baseball and
Mr. Football out of Mena High School in Mena, Arizona was drafted with the 6th overall pick by the Tampa Bay Rays.
Fields has a bat that is major league ready, and can play all fielding
positions in the Big leagues except shortstop which is what he is
projected to play. Tampa's fielding instructor David Mendoza told us Fields
should finish the season at Durham (AAA) where he can work on his glove. The
Rays drafted him as a SS but he's no
where near ready to play that position at any level. Fields has committed 188 errors in 396 minor league games at SS. The bat is ready, the SS glove in
not. The scouts we talk to feel he's a better center-fielder or third-basemen
than a shortstop. Despite all the negative comments we project Fields as an
All-Star CF or 3B once he reaches the Big Leagues. |

This is a player many of our scouts
think should have been our number 1 overall prospect. Gerson Wakefield is
another can't miss minor leaguer that fell to Houston at 7 in this years
draft. His best pitches are the 4-seam FB and curveball that will dominate
major league hitters once he reaches the Bigs. We predict he'll lead the
league in innings pitched and complete games. |

Our 8th overall prospect is Neal
Spangenberg, a 6 foot 4 inch power hitting second basemen from Rising Sun HS
in North East, Maryland. The 14th overall pick in the season 38 draft has
spent the last four seasons at Reno (AAA). Last season was his best as a pro
when he banged out 30 HR 90 RBI 299 BA 16-3 SB with a 1.025 OPS in just 95
games played. |

The number 1 overall selection in
season 38 has been a major disappointment based on what we expect from the top
player in the draft. However, we pick him as the 9th best prospect in
baseball. Weaver will be a 300 hitter at the major league level that can hit
righties and lefties to all fields. Excellent base runner with average speed.

The 7th overall pick last year is
another pure hitter with above average power. Burks started his career in
Rookie League in season 40 and finished the year in Low-A. This season he was
assigned to Fayetteville (High-A) where he played 20 games before being
promoted to Corpus Christi Hooks (AA) of the Texas League where he is
batting 336 in 211 at bats for the division leading Hooks (56-47). |
