It’s that time of year when the Robert E. McCabe Magazine
announces its Mid-Summer Major League All-Pro Team. We would also like to
announce our Mid-Summer MVP, Cy Young, and this year for the first time we will
include our ML All-Rookie Squad and a Rookie of the Year selection.
Unlike the Cy Young award winner the MVP choice was our
toughest selection. This group comprises the usual suspects. Arizona
Diamondbacks (64-27) Center-Fielder Clarence Finley who is arguably the best
position player on the best team. Season sixteen’s (16) biggest off season free
agent signing Philip Priest who spent his first 10 years with the Pittsburgh Pirates,
traded to the Detroit Tigers last year before bolting to the Colorado Rockies
for the cash. And who can ignore the season Texas First-Basemen Diory Park is
having. However, after looking at all the numbers we decided to pick All-Everything
and four time league MVP as our Mid-Summer Most Valuable Player; Tony Cortes (LF) of the Kansas City Royals. This former batting champion and first ballot
Hall of Famer is again leading the league in batting average (by 40 points),
OBP, OPS, and Runs Scored. Kansas City tied Texas for the division title last
year and should be in a similar position this year.
The Mid-Summer Cy Young goes to the most dominant pitcher in
baseball since his promotion to the big leagues in season 11; Arizona’s Vince Garcia
He is only 26 years-old and a two time Cy Young award winner. Garcia won 24 games
in season 15 which tied Francisco Gandarilla (season 5) and Benito Ordonez (season
9) for wins in a single-season. With 16 wins at
the break we look for Garcia to break his own record of 24. The Las
Vegas Gold Sheet has posted the over and under at 28 wins. We are taking the
over.
Toronto Blue Jays Julio Castro is our Mid-Summer ROY choice.
Castor was a first round selection (12th overall) out of Mansfield,
Ohio. He is a power hitting First-Baseman/Corner-Outfielder that leads all
rookies with 28 Home Runs, 86 RBIs, Slugging Percentage, and Runs Scored. Toronto
is 54-37 and only 2 games behind the Minnesota Twins for the American League
North title.
