Mid-Summer Awards
New York, NY (McC) We’re here at the site of this year’s mid-summer
classic taking a final look at the players and coaches that will make up this
year’s mid-summer award winners and the McCabe Magazine mid-summer all-pro
squad. The McCabe Magazine selection committee is made up of McCabe Magazine
baseball writers, senior editors, all 32 major league beat writers, and
selected MLB front office personnel.
The Candidates
This year the mid-summer MVP candidates are Julio Martin (43 HR 315 BA) of the Chicago
Cubs, last year’s winner Tony Cortes (27 HR 369 BA), and Colorado’s Philip Priest (28 HR 350 BA). With all three
candidates so closely matched we decided to let the team’s records and position
in the standings be the deciding factor. That said, the mid-summer MVP is Tony
Cortes of the Kansas City Royals (68-44). Of the three candidates Corte’s team
is the only team in first place, leading the American League South division by
9 games. With season’s 19 MVP Cortes leading the way, the Royals have won the
division four consecutive years 14-18, tying with Texas in season 14 for the
division crown. Cortes is a free-agent at the end of this season and at 32 will
he command another max deal, and when will the skills start to decline? We’re
guessing a 4-5 year deal at max money which would be well worth the cash if
that signing produces a World Series contender.
Outstanding Pitcher
Our mid-summer Outstanding Pitcher award winner came down to
four excellent nominees. They are Arizona’s Luther Abercrombie (12-6, 1.99 ERA), San Diego
pitchers Asdrubal Pelaez , (17-3, 2.31 ERA), Tony Tanaka (16-5, 2.97 ERA), and New York Met’s
Shawn Bunch (11-3, 2.14 ERA). After crushing
the numbers and analyzing all the data we decided the winner of this year’s
mid-summer Outstanding Pitcher award goes to the best pitcher on the best team,
Asdrubal Pelaez. The San Diego Padres (79-33) have the best record in baseball
and lead the best division in major league baseball by 7 games and well on
their way of depending their season 18 World Series championship.
Top Closers
The mid-summer Fireman award nominees are Harry Diaz (31 saves 0.96 whip 1.76 ERA) of the
Toronto Blue Jays, Kansas City’s Harry Diaz (29 saves 1.17 whip 1.41 ERA), and
the Rockies Ronald Kipnis (22 saves 1.22 whip 1.98 ERA). Our
mid-summer Fireman award winner for season 19 is Harry Diaz. This closer is a
week 3 pitcher of the week award winner and should establish new career highs
in saves (40) whip (1.12) and ERA (1.98).
We recognize the Coaches
For the first time in McCabe Magazine history, we would like
to recognize some of the outstanding coaches in the Robert E. McCabe Major Leagues.
Our mid-summer Bench Coach of the year
is Eddie Barker of the San Diego Padres. Our
pitching coach selection is also from the Padres organization Peter Westbrook (2.96 team ERA). The hitting coach
of the year is Jimmy Salazar of the Kansas City Royals which
lead the majors with a .851 OPS.
