TWENTY YEARS and COUNTING
Thanks to our Commissar and Owners
Chicago, ILL (McC) - The Robert E. McCabe League is 20 years
old. It is the finest league in the Hardball dynasty world, and the best run
thanks to our founder and commissar,
pat007ohmss *, thanks Pat! I would also like to
thank the owners in our league for being so committed, and competitive at every
level, in terms of building a winning organization, active trading, reading the
blog, and the unbelievable rollovers, thanks guys!
With the league turning 21, McCabe Magazine wanted to recognize
the players that made this league what it is today by announcing the first
“McCabe Magazine All-Decade Teams.” We put together All Decade squads for the
first decade (seasons 1-10), and second decade (seasons 11-20). We also selected
Most Valuable Players (MVP), CY Young, and Fireman of the Decade for each
decade. One thing I would like to point out before unveiling our choices for
All-Decade is that this was not an easy task. Example; how do you compare eight (8)
All-Star appearances, Rookie of the Year versus three (3) appearances with two
(2) MVP awards, and number 2 on the all-time Runs Batted In list? In other
words, every selection is debatable, but we feel confident that we made the
right choices.
Denny Johnson wins the All-Decade MVP
The All Decade awards were not as difficult as the team
selections. The first decade MVP came down to
Denny Johnson (664 HR, 1824 RBI, 312 BA) and
Placido Ortiz (583 HR, 1728 RBI, 335 BA). Our choice is Johnson. The All-Decade CY
Young goes to
Julio Ramirez (279 wins, 2.91 ERA). Our choice for Fireman of the Decade goes to
Arthur Bradshaw (472 Saves)
The Decade Squab for Season One
Catcher
Tom Metzger gets our vote for catcher of the decade. Metzger finish the first decade with 7 All-Star appearances and 4 Silver Slugger awards. Second on our list to receive votes was Harry Cabrera. This runner up had 4 All-Star, one Gold Glove, and 2 World Series Rings.
First-base
Our choice for 1st base goes to Hall of Famer, Placido Ortiz, the all time Hit King (2,923 Hits). He is a 8 time All-Star during the decade, 3 time MVP, 8 Silver Slugger awards, 2 World Series Rings, and a Rookie of the Year award in season one. Others under consideration; Hall of Famer
Rick Ward (our choice for DH of the decade), and
Donne DeWitt (432 HR, 1437 RBI, 305 BA).
Second-base
Apollo Stanifer is our 2nd basemen. Stanifer is first on the all time games played list with 2,512, and second on the all time hit list behind Ortiz with 2,796 hits. He played 16 years in the majors, all with the Philadelphia Phillies. Stanifer played 162 games every year from season 3 to season 13.
Third-base
Hall of Famer, Octavio Colon (564 HR, 1534 RBI, 277 BA) won Rookie of the Year in season 3, has won Silver Slugger awards at SS, 2B, and 3B. Has a total of 10 All-Star appearances (8 during the 1st decade), and is a World Series winner. Honorable mention;
Clark Crespo 3 World Series Rings (HR 309, 1294 RBI, 292 BA).
Shortstop
Mr Barker has appeared in 6 American League All-Star games during the decade with 3 Sliver Slugger awards at SS.
Leftfield
Bernie Guzman had 5 All-Star appearances, 2 World Series Rings, 2 Silver Slugger awards, and 1 Gold Glove.
Centerfield
This was a three horse race between
Enrique Gomez (5 time All-Star),
Kip Peterson (4 time All-Star), and
Chad Rolls (4 time All-Star). We decided to let the All-Star appearances be the tie breaker.
Right-field
This season 19 Hall of Famer is the All Time career RBI King (1824) and 4th on the Home Run list with 664. 3rd on the career games played with 2,473. The 165 intentional walks puts him 3rd all time. Denny Johnson won 2 MVPs, 3 Sliver Slugger for RF, 2 Silver Slugger at 3B, and is a 6 time All-Star (5 in the decade).
Designated Hitter
Rick Ward is also a Hall of Famer, voted into the hall in season 17. He is a 8 time All-Star during the decade, and won the Home Run Derby three time. Ward also has 3 Silver Slugger awards at DH, and is a World Series winner.
Right-hand Starter
Julio Ramirez is a 9 time All-Star (4 in the 1st decade), 3 Cy Young awards, and a World Series winner in decade number 2. He is second on the all time career wins list with 279, 5th on the all career ERA list with a 2.91, second on the all time strikeout list with 3,246.
Left-hand Starter
Francisco Gandarilla was elected into this years Hall of Fame. He started season 21 tied with Julio Ramirez on the all time career wins list with 278. He is now 3rd behind Ramirez (279), and the top dog
Luther Abercrombie 305 (only 2 All-Star during the decade). Gandarilla is 3rd on the all time shutout list with 18, behind Abercrombie (21), and
Vince Garcia with 32 (only 2 All-Star appearances during 1st decade). Both Abercrombie and Garcia are the leading candidates for the decade 2 team.
Closer
Arthur Bradshaw is second on the all time saves list behind
Skeeter Brown (525). We picked Bradshaw over Brown for the following reasons; Bradshaw is a 5 time All-Star and 2 time Fireman of the Year during the decade verse Skeeter's 4 All-Star appearances and no FOY during the first decade.
