WHERE ARE THEY NOW
HALL of FAMERS
The First
Two Hall of Fame Inductees
Albuquerque,
NM (McC.com) – Where are they, the first two major league players inducted into
the Robert E. McCabe Hall of Fame? In season 16 the arrogant, egotistical, and
self-centered Hall of Fame caretakers finally found a pair of players worthy of
their vote and induction, Skeeter Brown,
P and Philip Ashby,
1B. It took 16
years before this panel of uninformed experts selected a player(s) to be
enshrined into Cooperstown. With that said, “Where are they now?”

Today we are
in Albuquerque, New Mexico watching a AAA game between the Albuquerque Isotopes
and the Iowa Cubs of the Pacific League with Hall Famer Skeeter Brown who is presently
working as an Advance Scout in the San Diego Padres organization. Brown is here
scouting Albuquerque, the next opponent of El Paso, Chihuahua’s (38-72) San
Diego’s AAA affiliate. Its 105 degrees in
the stands at Isotopes Park, in between his fifth and sixth Coors Light the 64
year-old Skeeter, father of 2 and husband to Lisa Mae Brown, tell us he really
enjoys his job with the Padres, working with the younger players and watching
ball games. After being released by the Braves at the age of 42 Mr. Brown was
offered a coaching job with the Padres big club where he played 20 of his 22
years. He turned the offer down because he wanted to work in the minors. “This
is where the real baseball is played, the bus rides, the meal money, the
comradery, this is what I miss about the game,.. and the cold beer.”
We asked the
World Series champion about the Padres current major league record of 26-83 and
the 112 loses the team totaled in season 37. “It’s been tough the last few seasons,
but we have some talent down here that will be in the majors shortly. They will
have us back in the playoffs sooner than later.” One of those talented players
is season 37 AAA Silver Slugger award winner Chan Shigetoshi, High A Cliff Silvestri (3B), Hansel
Kent (MR), Low A Edwar
Figureoa (SP), Rookie
leaguers Darrin
Bailey (2B) and Vic
Posey (SP). Pro
Baseball Focus has rated this group as “can’t miss prospects” and future
All-Stars. Vic Posey, the second overall pick in this year’s draft was tab by
McCabe Magazine’s draft issue “the next great pitcher and a imminent Cy Young
award winner.” After slugging down another 3 brews, Skeeter declares this group
of youngsters will be challenging the Seattle Mariners for the National League
West Division Title in four seasons. “I guarantee it,. BOOK IT!”
Okay then,
so where are they now; Skeeter Brown 5th on the all-time saves list
(525) is an Advance Scout in the Pacific League for the Padres and a NL West Division
prognosticator.

Our second
“Where are they Now” player is 68 year-old Hall Famer Philip Ashby. We found
this cowboy on his 1800 acre ranch near Woodard, Oklahoma about 150 miles
northwest of his hometown Midwest City, Oklahoma. Ashby, who made
$65,143,000.00 during his playing career, has owned the cattle and sheep farm
for 35 years. “I got it with that first $2 million check the Cardinals gave me,
been here ever since,.. at the time I really didn’t think I would be in the
league that long, I saw so many players come and go,.. I was thinking I’ll be
around about 3 or 4 seasons,. so I said to myself,. you better find something
to do when they show me the door.” Philip “And that’s when I got the ranch. I
was raised of a cattle farm,.. that’s all I knew, playing ball and working of
my dads farm.” His second job is in radio. Ashby has been the radio color
commentator on the Cardinals broadcast since his retirement in season 14. He has
never won a World Series but has played in 3 with the Cardinals. However, after
being released by the Kansas City Royals in season 14 he joined the broadcast
team at KMOX when the Cardinals won their first World Series in season 14, 4
games to 2 over the San Diego Padres. To show their appreciation the Cardinals honored
Ashby when they presented him with a World Series Ring during the team’s City
Hall celebration and World Series parade.
“Baseball is
my life and this gig keeps me close to the game. People call me ‘cowboy’ and I
tell em, I’m not just a cowboy, I’m a ball player.” And he’s one of the best.
Listed below
you’ll find Philip Ashby’s
postseason stats during the Cardinals 3 losing World Series appearances.

Woody Haniger (KC) leads the major leagues with 88 Stolen
Bases and 1 Caught Stealing! Tony Bonilla (NY1) of the New York Yankees has 72 SB and
only 3 CS. And the number three (3) bandit on the list is Oswaldo Flores (SEA) who you could argue is the most impressive criminal with 53 SB and a BIG FAT goose egg 0 caught stealing.
