WELCOME TO THE McCABE MAGAZINE SEASON 35 FIRST INSTALLMENT
Welcome to the Robert E. McCabe Magazine and the first issue
of season 35. As we have done at the start of each season we have updated the
sidebars on the blog. Among the items listed on the sidebars are the top five
(5) major league career leaders in several batting and pitching categories.
What we wanted to do this year was to take a look at the active players on each
career list and note any movement on that list.
Major League Active All-Time
Career Leaders
Before season 33 the folks here at McCabe Magazine have
always recognized Tony Cortes as the best player we’ve ever seen
along with pitchers Vince Garcia and Luther Abercrombie a close second and third in
no particular order. However, that way of thinking changed with the emergence
of Alexei DaSilva, who not only broke his own
all-time Home Run record with 737, but he also holds the all-time RBI record
(1,960) and the all-time career record in Hits with 3,202. DaSilva has played
all of his 20 years in the Toronto Blue Jays organization, spending only two
seasons in the minors. His skills have deteriorated quickly the past few years
and it is our opinion DaSilva should retire and wait for the Hall of Fame phone
call. The other active player on the all-time Home Run, RBI and Hits list is Jose Colon (1B/DH) of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
He has a career total of 703 Home runs, which is second all-time, 1,892 RBIs putting him third on the all-time career list, behind Moose Kennedy (1,947 RBI), and 3,040 Hits which
8 behind the man in second place, Bronson Whang who was the first player to
collect 3,000 hits in a career. Just like DaSilva, Colon skills have declined
in recent years. We don’t look for Colon to retire, according to several
associates close to the situation, Colon has spoken openly about not
hanging up the spikes until he catches and pasts Alexei DaSilva on the all-time
Home Run, RBI and Hits list.
Major League Career
Batting
In Career Batting Average the top five are still the top 5
with a slight change in the order. Wilkin Lopez who was tied in third (3rd) place with Hall of
Famer Tony Cortes at the end of season 33 with a .332
BA has dropped to 4th on the list with a career batting average of
.326. Lopez played in 104 games with the Kansas City Royals last season batting
.290, and was then traded to the Milwaukee Brewers where he batted .254 in 58
games. His season 34 total BA of .278 cost him 6 points on his career batting total,
and we look for this future Hall of Famer to drop from a first ballot inductee
to a long-shot if he continue to play, he is an unsigned free agent and looking
to catch on with a contender. The serviceable Lopez, born in River Falls,
Wisconsin says he’ll love to stay in Milwaukee or play for the Minnesota Twins
who drafted him out of Minneapolis Community & Technical College in season
23 with the second overall pick. His bat makes him one of the top free agents
on the market and shouldn’t have any problems finding a home this upcoming
season.
The All-Time Active
Pitchers
There were four active pitchers in season 34 listed on our
Career All-Time Pitching list posted on the Blog sidebars. Setup/Closer Pedro Manuel and middle reliever Yamid Zapata both of the San Diego Padres, 35
year-old St Louis Cardinal Starter Adam Bradford, and Ronald Kipnis a Reliever for the first 20 years
of his career with the Colorado Rockies then converted into a Starter last
season when he was traded to the Rochester Broncos where he pitched in 29 games
posting a 0-12 won/lost record with a 5.35 ERA in 28 starts. We think Kipnis
can still pitch in the big leagues, but he needs to return to the bullpen as a
setup man or in a mop-up role. Pedro Manuel is number one on the career ERA
list with a 2.45 ERA and number one on the Career All-Time Save list with 674
saves. Manuel is signed through season 35 which is the last year of a 5 year
$39 million dollar deal he signed in season 31. Last year Manuel posted a 1-4
record in 41 games with 32 saves, 1.39 WHIP and a 4.54 ERA. The precious season
(33) he recorded a 1-2 won/lost 43 saves, 0.99 WHIP, and a 2.64 ERA. He left
San Diego at the end of season 33 throwing like a 22 year-old stud, and
reported for spring training in season 34 throwing like a 37 year-old pitcher
looking to collect the $15.6 M left on the final 2 years on his 5 year deal. He
still has decent control however, the pitch that made this future HOF an all-time great, his 4-seam fastball is lacking velocity, and the his slider will
have a hard time getting High-A hitters out. This should be his last year as a
big leaguer. Yamid Zapata has pitched in 1,378 games during
his 18 year career, 17 of which were in the major leagues. Zapata has a career
2.78 ERA which is 5th on the All-Time list. Second on the All-Time
Career ERA list is Adam Bradford a former Rookie of the Year and a
5 time Cy Young award winner. He still has all the stuff that made him the Ace
of the American League with a career 2.47
ERA. Bradford has a career win total of 230 which is 48 behind Francisco Gandarilla (278 wins) the pitcher
holding down the 5th spot on the all-time list.
