THIS WEEK IN BASEBALL

TWIB NOTES

THIS WEEK IN BASEBALL

A Inside Look at Major League Baseball

From the Minors to the Big Leagues

The Pittsburgh Pirates are disappointment with the performance of pitchers Curt Small (2-3, 1.96 Whip, 5.09 ERA) and Cleatus Musick (2-6, 1.45 Whip, 5.45 ERA). Both are available for prospects

The Red Sox’s 32 losses so far this season, 12 have been by 1 run, and 6 by 2 runs. Boston has a 1 game lead over 2nd place Baltimore Orioles in the division, and here is the AL East standings in 1-run games:

We found this “stat of the day” in the San Diego Padres media guide; little know tidbit, the NL West has represented the National League in the World Series in 17 out of 37 seasons. With that said we decided go back twenty (20) years and rank the divisions on Pennant and World Series winners. Here’s our divisional rankings.

Red Sox are shopping AAA first-basemen Freddy Lee (21 HR, 56 RBI, 328 BA, 985 OPS). They’re looking for ML pitching in return.

Dodgers sixteen (16) round selection in season 35 Archie Simmons (C) made his ML debut to try to turn around the pathetically under performing Dodgers. In his first major league game against the Rochester Broncos he hit a 2-run homer in the top of the 8th to tie the game at 3. The Dodgers would go on to lose 4-3 but the call-up seem like the right move and the city of angels was going bonkers over the 24 year-old catcher. However, since that stunning debut he’s played in 10 games, 34 AB, batting .147 with 1 HR, 6 RBI.

The Mets are involved in a little league program operating in the New York/New Jersey area. The youth program “Strawberry-Gooden Little League" is fairly new operating in its 4th season. This program gives kids ages 6 through 16 an opportunity to play our great game. There are 2 or 3 teams in need of coaches and financial sponsorship. Any Owners interested should contact the Mets for more information on how you can help.

Last week Atlanta Braves owner franknterry appeared on Fox Sports South and made the following comments regarding the state of the Braves “I was basking in glory, and feeling pretty smug a week ago, and now I'm sliding down the drain, and my minor league teams are tripping over their own feet and landing on the DL....if this keeps happening I'll be in need of a 40 round draft! I am humbled!!!” Note; Since making that comment the Braves are 9-2 and on a 5 game winning streak.

Chicago White Sox pitching staff has given up 49 runs in a 5 game stretch resulting in a 1-4 record and are 2-10 in the last 12 games. They have gone from having the best record in the AL and 1st place in the division to 5 games out.

The Rochester Broncos are having trouble signing top overall pick Andy Weaver (2B). The 6 foot 173 lbs out of Chenoa, Illinois is undecided on playing pro baseball because he has scholarships on the table to play college football at Wisconsin, Northern Illinois, Notre Dame, and Northwestern. Besides being a top baseball prospect Weaver played quarterback on the Normal Community West HS team that went 39-4 during his 4 years as the starting QB, which includes 1 state title and 2 runner ups. However the only school willing to give Weaver a scholarship to play quarterback is Saint Xavier University a NAIA program in Chicago. All of the D1 scholarships see him as a wide receiver.

Prior to this year’s amateur draft San Francisco Giants owner wylie715 tweeted this comment from an unverified account “I’m not all that impressed by the draft class, but since I have the 9th pick and my next pick is something like #168, it probably doesn't matter much.” With the 9th pick in the first round the Giants selected Florida’s “Mr Baseball’ Mike Baker (RF) and assigned him to the Augusta GreenJackets (Low A) of the South Atlantic league. The scouts we spoke to say Baker has a major league bat and 4.3 speed. With that combination this bona fide slugger will move quickly through the minors. Defensively he has limited range and will never play outfield past High A, and will be a risk and first base. Look for a position change to 1B/DH in the next two week.

Anaheim Angels season 37 Gold-Glove winner Pedro Ynoa, LF (7 HR, 27 RBI, 252 BA) has requested a change of scenery due to his lack of playing time. The organization will honor his request and are willing to move him for starting pitching.

The Pirates are in need of some serious help in their starting rotation and willing to move Josmil Benavente (SS). He has 7 HR, 31 RBI, 284 BA and a .938 fielding percentage.

White Sox are looking for a righty reliever and will trade lefty Esteban Wilfredo (2-3, 1.23 Whip, 4.66 ERA) for similar righty

A trade was vetoed involving Red Sox and Mariners due to Boston GM pat007ohmss mistakenly faxing his lunch order to the league office. His order; turkey on New York rye, Wisconsin cheddar, Louisiana Red Hot sauce, bag of Idaho potato chips, and a pint of Tennessee sour mash (Jack Daniels).

Boston Globe is reporting Red Sox AAA phenom Billy Ray Colbert (1B/DH) a future MVP is available, but only in a mega trade for pitching. Colbert is batting .331 with 20 HR, 66 RBI and 1.045 OPS.

After signing a new 10-year radio deal with the start-up radio company McCabe Entertainment, the Angels are letting clubs know they have lots of cash to take on a big contract. The front office is telling the league “any contract you would like out of we’ll take it.” And like every owner in the league, they’re looking for pitching.

Pirates Alcides Diaz (2B) is available. He has 14 Home Runs, 57 RBI and a 309 BA (career 263 BA).

Seattle has placed 34 year-old reliever Reed Hutton (P) on the trading block. Hutson was signed by The Cincinnati Reds as an International Free-Agent in season 25 out of Dublin Ireland. Yes,.. I’ll say it again, out of Dublin Ireland. He has played for five teams during his 16 year pro career which includes two stents with the Reds. Here is his career numbers; 18-32 won/lost record, 1.28 Whip, 4.14 ERA.
