AROUND THE LEAGUE

League Transactions
6/10/19

After trading Henderson Betemit (P) to the Atlanta Braves for minor leaguers Geraldo Lee (RF) Julio Eusebio      (C) and Yadiel Sosa (SS), the Cardinals promoted 35 year-old Bruce Gonzales (P) from AAA where he made 12 appearances with a 1-3 record, 2 saves, 1.00 WHIP 1.71 ERA. Gonzales on the last year of a 2 year deal making $5.4 million started the year on the major league roster before being demoted on 6/1/19.

The Chicago White Sox placed season 38 Rookie of the Year Rougned Schoop (LF) on the 15-Day disable list with a bulging disk in his neck. Last season Schoop hit 49 HR and 134 RBI. This season he has 26 HR and 80 RBI however, he was in a major HR lump before being placed on the DL. Hitting just 4 round-trippers in his last 91 at bats.

Oakland Athletics decline the Rule 5 Return of SS Paul Ball from the Milwaukee Brewers and later the Cincinnati Reds. Ball was designated for assignment on 4/27/19 and claimed off waivers by the Brewers. Ball an IFA signee in season 32 appeared in 53 games with 41 AB 1 HR 8 RBI and a 268 Batting Average for Milwaukee and offered back to Oakland and subsequently waved. The Reds claimed Ball on 6/10/19 and also offered him back to Oakland. As of 6/11/19 Ball is still on the Reds roster and waiting for an assignment.

6/9/2019

Anaheim Angels activated Angelys Guez (P) from DL. He has pitched in 17 games with 16 starts posting a 4-5 record 1.25 Whip 4.15 ERA. This 30 year-old has a long history of major injuries. He has been on the 60-day DL three (3) times and one (1) 15-day stint. During his career he has had 2 elbow surgeries and 1 shoulder surgery.  The Angels placed him on the DL due to elbow inflammation.

The San Francisco Giants waived Harry Almonte (P) 13 games 0-0 record 2.08 Whip and a 9.00 ERA. Arizona Diamondbacks claimed Almonte and assigned him to the Reno Aces (AAA) of the Pacific League.

Cleveland Indians promoted former Big Leaguer Cy Britton (P) to the big club after starting the season in AAA. Britton spent the entire season 39 in the starting rotation on the major league roster going 8-13, 1.44 Whip 5.45 ERA. To his surprise he didn’t make the major league roster out of spring training and was assigned to Columbus the AAA affiliate. In 18 starts for the Clippers Britton posted a 11-1 record 1.17 Whip 2.87 ERA.

6/8/2019

After signing International Free-Agent Ezdra Costilla and giving him a $40,000 bonus the Rochester Broncos released the 18 year-old without playing a single game. The details surrounding the release is still a mystery however, a source close to the situation told Deadspin.com Costilla was released because he refused to wear pants during batting practice and to team meals at the rookie training facility. The actual release happen following a Meet-and Greet with the fans when he removed his pants and under garments while explaining his theory on how to throw a split-finger fastball to a group of senior citizens from the Phoenix Senior Center.

Colorado Rockies released the following Rookie League pitchers Benny Robinson  (19) Yeico Manzanillo (19) Giancarlo Molina (19) Mason Martin (19) and Deacon Coste (18) following their arrest on charges of trying to pass fake $5 bills at a Jupiter, Florida massage parole in which was being investigated by the Feds for video taping NFL owners without their knowledge or permission.
Kansas City Royals added Jose Valdes (1B) to the 40-Man Roster after acquiring him in a trade with San Francisco for Bing Hardy (LF) and Abdullah Butcher (P).

6/7/2019

The New York Yankees traded their number 3 rated prospect Naoto Chang (P) to the Cleveland Indians for Andres Mejia (P) and the Indians number 1 rated prospect Ben McCartin (1B).  Mejia was assigned to the major league club while McCartin was assigned to AAA Scranton of the International League. Since joining the Bronx Bombers Mejia has started 18 games with a 7-7 record 1.41 Whip 3.82 ERA. He spent his first 5-years in the Cleveland Indians minor league farm system before finally getting his opportunity to pitcher in the Major Leagues with New York. McCartin was the number 11 overall pick by Cleveland in the season 39 draft. He has been rushed through both organizations and is struggling as a result. Last year he played 2 games in Rookie ball, and was promoted to advance A ball (High A) and played 54 games. This season he started in AA where he played 72 games before being traded to the Yankees. The Yankees promoted him to AAA where he has posted a .241 BA.  The Indianas assigned Naoto Chang to their AA affiliate.

San Diego Padres promoted 23 year-olds Stretch O'Malley (LF) and Alvin Blake (P) to the big club on 6/7/19. Both players are showing the fans the future is bright in San Diego. O’Malley a supplemental 1* round selection has played in 8 games batting .344 in 32 plate appearances. Blake was a late first (29) round pick in season 35. He has 2 starts a 1-1 record 1 complete game 0.94 Whip and a 2.12 ERA. To make room on the roster the Padres released veteran pitcher Gabriel Bonilla. He pitched in 30 games this season with a 2.70 ERA. He was making the league minimum and should get a few calls before seasons end.

San Francisco Giants acquired Bing Hardy (LF) 28 Abdullah Butcher (P) 25 in a trade with the Royals for Jose Valdes (1B). With the Giants, Hardy is batting .306 in 36 AB and Butcher, a career minor leaguer was promoted to the majors after joining the Giants. He has appeared in 2 games with a 1-0 record and an EYE POPPING 3.00 Whip 27.00 ERA. The front office thinks it’s way too early to make any judgements.

The New York Mets promoted Virgil Ortiz (P) to the major league roster from Binghamton (AA) where he appeared in 18 games with 17 starts a 0-6 record, 1 save 1.32 Whip and a 3.25 ERA. The Mets acquired the 12 year pro, 3 at the major league level via FA on 5/3/19 after being released by the Florida Marlins.

League sources have told McCabe Magazine the Yankees are shopping the following players;
Number 2 starter Rafael Nunez (P) 32 years-old started 18 games 4-12 record 1.46 Whip 4.71 ERA
Season 31 Rookie of the Year Rolando Nova (C) 32 years-old average 27.6 HR per 162 games.
Part-time closer/setup-man Lisalverto Jacquez (P) 32 years-old career numbers 284 games 27-17 record 33 saves 1.28 Whip 4.34 ERA Danry Beltran (1B) 27 years-old major league averages 26 HR, 97 RBI 285 BA per 162.

6/6/2019

Career minor leaguer Bono Maxwell (P) 28 was released by the Giants after spending 7 seasons in the San Diego Padres minor league system. Maxwell never made it pass AA. He signed a minor league FA contract with San Francisco on 5/26/19 and released on 6/6/19. The Giants also released minor leaguer Philip Vaughn (P) 26 in 11 games at San Jose (High A) he had 1 start posting a 0-1 record 2.32 Whip 10.02 ERA

White Sox signed FA hold-out Jerrod Perez (3B) 33 to a prorated league minimum contract on 6/6/19. After spending 13 seasons with the White Sox he left via Free-Agency at the end of S39. According to kgrffth owner and director of baseball operations, Perez asking price was in “never, never land.” So they let him walk. With a quarter of the season gone he and his people came back to the bargaining table to make a deal and we put our foot on his throat, made him say in the Pedro Martinez voice “who’s yo DADDY”, and got the deal we wanted $391,000.

Colorado Rockies activated Walt Parker (P) 25 from 60-Day DL. Parker complained about shoulder soreness in the 9th inning of a 7-4 lost against Richmond. After getting the first two batters to ground out he proceeded to walk the next batter followed by a HBP. He motioned to the dugout and was later placed on the disable list with a sore rotator cuff. In his first game back against the Detroit Tigers he pitched a 7 pitch scoreless 9th, facing 3 batters and striking out 1.

Texas Rangers signed Ron Chambers (P) 31 to a 2-year contract extension worth $9.2 million. Career numbers 299 games 21-20 record 349 Ks I 351 innings 1.26 Whip 3.33 ERA

Astros activated former 12th round selection Jarrett Craig (2B) 28 from the 15-Day DL with a bulging disk in his next.

6/5/2019

Atlanta Braves and the New York Mets agreed to the following trade;

Braves acquire Wascar Ramirez (P) 31 season totals 22 games 0-3 record 1.37 Whip 3.97 ERA since joining the Braves he pitched in 3 games 0-0 record 4.2 innings 0.43 Whip 0.00 ERA

Mets got Corey Blair (P) 29 season totals 19 games 4 starts 1-4 record 1.51 Whip 5.33 ERA with New York 4 games 4 starts  0-4 record 1.54 Whip 4.62 ERA

The Braves gave Ramirez a 1-year contract extension through season 41 worth $3.5 M.

The Giants placed injury plague pitcher Dann Jackson 31 on the 15-Day DL with shoulder inflammation. In season 35 Jackson was placed on the 60-Day DL with a ligament tear in his shoulder, and in season 37 knee surgery landed him on the 60-Day DL. To fill his spot on the roster San Francisco called-up season 37 first round pick (6 overall) Rashun Blair (P). Minor league career numbers 133 games 34 starts 6-17 record 27 saves 35 SVO 1.15 Whip 3.33 ERA. Another rush job, great potential and should be pitching at the AA level at best. To my friends in the Bay area sorry, just trying to spice things up, we need more clicks at McCabeMagazine.com.

THE TEAMS OF THE DECADE

THE DECADE OF THE 30s
THE DECADE OF DOMINATION
THE SEATTLE MARINERS McCABE MAGAZINE'S TEAM OF THE DECADE

Daytona Beach, FLA (McC.com) - McCabe Magazines team of the decade is the Seattle Mariners. This team dominated the decade like the San Diego Padres dominated the decade of the 20s. Seattle won 1087 games, 4 National League Pennants, 9 NL West division titles, and 4 Robert E McCabe World Series trophies. Each of the noted team stats is the best in the major leagues during that decade except for division titles. Seattle and the Washington Nationals both finished the decade with 9 titles, the Mariners winning 9 straight, and Washington winning 8. The Nationals consecutive division title streak was broken in season 38 by the Boston Red Sox when they captured title with an 85-77 record.

Seattle has won the National League West division every year since season 31, and has finished the year with the best record in baseball seven (7) times. In season 32 this club set the single season record in wins with 122, and followed that up with a win total of 121 in season 33. Some of the old-timers in our news room claim they haven’t seen a team better than the season 20 San Diego Padres (116-46) which won the World Series and was later named “The Greatest Team of All-Time” in a season 29 issue of McCabe Magazine.  In our decade of the 20s issue The Padres was also named our “Team of the Decade.” However, with all due respect to my fellow colleagues Peter Gammons and Bob Costas, in my opinion regarding Greatest Team of All Time, there’s no question the Seattle Mariners dynasty are in the conversation, with the 32 Mariners bumping the Padres off the Iron Throne and staking claim to the title as “The Greatest Team of All Time” with the 20 Padres falling to 2nd on my list. Peter said “fine that’s your opinion” but Bob who is still bitter about being removed from the NBC Sunday Night NFL broadcast became incensed! He called me stupid, dumb, and he was sick and tired of being my imaginary friend. After speaking with management Bob was let go and replaced with Buster Olney who helped me with the research for this article. Thanks Buster!

What a decade for the Mariners, now what’s ahead for the league, who will be our next team of the decade? The 40s have begun,.. Enjoy!

Listed below you will find our team stats for the decade.
