McCabe Magazine TWIB Notes

  • ·        The St. Louis Cardinals have let clubs know that Winston Stein (SS) and Orlando Baez (2B) are available and according to a source in the Cardinal organization the club is looking for prospects in return.
  • ·        Pittsburgh Pirates have traded Alejandro Gonzalez (3B) to the Oakland A’s after getting into a shoving match with 17 year-old bat boy over a video game the kid had loan Gonzales.
  • ·        Boston Red Sox is shopping AAA reliever Jerrod Hutchison (P). This former 1st round selection, 6th overall should draw a lot of attention.
  • ·        New York Mets starting pitcher Alberto Rodriguez (career 48-37 ERA 3.59) suffered a stress fracture in the 5th inning against the Cleveland Indians and placed on the 60-day DL.
  • ·        In two consecutive games against the Rochester Broncos the Chicago Cubs had two players come off the bench and hit pinch hit grand slams. On April 27 backup catcher Walker Simms (R) (2 HR, 7 RBI, 220) hit a pinch hit grand slam off Bronco relief pitcher Adam Hermansen (0-2, 8.31 ERA) in the bottom of the ninth (9), his 4th HR of the season to tie the game at 12. The Cubs would go on to win 13-12 in 10 innings. The next night, in the bottom of the 8th with the Cubs holding a 5-3 lead, little used utility player Willis O'Neill (S) in only his 10th AB of the season came off the bench to face Bronco middle reliever Denny Long (R) (2-0, 6.38 ERA) and hit a pinch hit grand slam, the Cubs second consecutive PH grand slam in as many days. The Division leading Cubs would send the Wrigley Field northsiders home with a 9-6 win.
  • ·        The Seattle Mariners is shopping setup men Max Douglass (P) and Hugh Harris (P). Douglass career numbers; 50-43, 59 Saves in 91 opportunities, 1.47 Whip, and a 4.90 ERA. He is on the last year of a 3 year deal that pays him $5.6M.  In his 16 year pro career the heavily traveled Harris has played for Seattle in seasons 36 and 31, Boston Red Sox S35, San Diego Padres S34, Kansas City Royals S33, Minnesota Twins S32, Atlanta Braves for 7 major league seasons 30 – 24, and 3 minor league seasons 24 – 22, and 2 minor league seasons with the Chicago Cubs S21 -20. His career stat line of 79-94, 1.58 Whip, 4.28 ERA.
  • ·        St. Louis Cardinals saves leader Cleatus Musick (P)  (1-1, 12 Saves, 0.92 Whip, 2.77 ERA) has been traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for AAA centerfielder Chad Rhodes. After the trade was completed the AAA standout was visibly upset when he learned he was assigned to the Cardinals High A affiliate the Peoria Chiefs where he has appeared in 2 games with 4 hits, 2 RBI and a 364 batting average.
  • ·        The Cincinnati Reds claimed Myron Webster (P) (5 games, 1 GS, 0-1, 1 Save, 1.37 Whip, 2.93 ERA) off waivers from the Mariners who demoted the long-reliever/spot starter to make room for several moves including the promotions of AAA pitchers Chris Little reliever (big league stat; 2 Saves 3 SVO, 0.67 Whip, 1.50 ERA) Tony Park reliever (big league stat; 5 games, 1-0, 7.04 ERA), and Victor Diaz, SP (big league stat; 3 starts, 3-0, 0.75 Whip, 0.00 ERA).
  • ·        The Pittsburgh Pirates AAA affiliate Indianapolis Indians has scheduled a Bobble Head night for 37 year-old Parker Carter (1B) Pittsburgh’s All-Time minor league HR leader. With 698 Home Runs the 2 time AAA MVP and the once king of the long ball has played in only 26 AAA games the past 3 seasons with only 5 Home Runs. Carter is in his 20th season, the last 16 with Indianapolis is making a whopping $102,000 this year, has 6 minor league All-Star appearances, 5 Silver Slugger awards, and 2 Gold Glove awards. With his playing time dwindling and rumors swirling this could be the Indians most popular player last season.
  • ·        Pirates have traded David Cantu (SS) (31 games, 3 HR, 11 RBI, 323 BA) and AAA Shortstop Larry Kozlowski to the Reds for second basemen Lance Ratterree (28 games, 18 AB, 167 BA) and AA prospects Geraldo Lopez and Cedrick Glass.
  • ·        Arizona Diamondbacks have added offseason Free Agent signing Bo Henry (R) to the trading block. The folks in Arizona are very disappointed with his production, 9 games, 34 AB, 5 Hits, 0 doubles, 0 HR, 1 RBI, with a 147 BA. Henry has told several local reporters he wants out of Arizona for several reasons including the lack of playing time. He played in 153 games last year with the Anaheim Angels, 140 with Milwaukee Brewers in S34, and 154 with the Brewers in S33. The career 245 hitter is still a very reliable Shortstop and could be that missing piece for a struggling defensive club.
  • ·        St. Louis long reliever/spot starter Rougned Santana (P) has been added to the trade block. He is a former AAA Cy Young award winner and 4 time minor league All-Star. Promoted to the big club in season 34 where he appeared in 14 games, 0-0 record, 1 Save, 6.75 ERA, season 35 he played in 36 games, 6 starts, 2-2, 5 Saves, 4.61 ERA, and this season stat line; 9 games, 0-0 record, 1 Save, 8.64 ERA.
